Climate Change

MEO recognizes the challenges posed by climate change and the crucial role that companies play in the transition to a sustainable economy. It is committed to this transition and to helping mitigate global environmental risks, while serving as a driving force for innovation, economic growth, and prosperity, actively contributing to the creation of a safer, fairer, and more balanced future for current and future generations.

Climate Risks

Physical Risks

  • Forest fires
  • Storms / Strong Winds and Heavy Rain

Transition Risks

  • Reporting and GHG Emissions Requirements
  • Change in consumer behavior

Opportunities

  • Improving operational efficiency or recycling
  • Transition to low- or zero-emission energy sources

Managing these risks and opportunities enables MEO to strengthen the sustainability and resilience of its processes by adopting more efficient technologies and optimizing consumption.

Energy Efficiency

We use energy from 100% renewable sources in mainland Portugal, supplied exclusively by MEO Energia. Founded in 2020 as part of a groundbreaking and disruptive project, MEO Energia energy and sustainability with technology and telecommunications. In addition to reducing its own emissions, MEO’s energy helps lower the ecological footprint of its thousands of residential and business customers.

Reducing the Carbon Footprint

In 2023, the SBTi approved MEO’s CO2 emissions reduction targets:

  • A 70% reduction in Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 (indirect) emissions by 2030, based on 2019 levels.
  • A reduction in Scope 3 (value chain) emissions through the establishment of science-based targets by 82% of its suppliers within five years.

Circular Economy

MEO is focusing on several areas to promote circularity throughout the value chain, with the goal of contributing to the proper waste management hierarchy through the reuse of products and the extension of their lifespan.

Circular Economy

Branches

Elimination or reduction of paper, plastic, and other materials, particularly through the transition from SIM cards to eSIMs and the application of eco-design principles in the development of packaging and equipment.

Reducing paper use in invoices and contracts by digitizing documents.

Elimination of the traditional set-top box, allowing only the use of Smart TVs or media devices.

Refurbishment of CPE equipment, promoting reuse and extending the devices' useful life.

Implementation of measures in stores to promote the responsible return of used equipment.
