A new partnership enables MEO to provide connectivity from the OneWeb constellation in Portugal, adding a layer of redundancy to terrestrial networks for businesses, public entities, and organizations with critical communications continuity requirements.

MEO is now offering Eutelsat’s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) connectivity services in Portugal through the OneWeb constellation, strengthening the ability of companies, public entities, and organizations with critical business continuity requirements to maintain their communications even when terrestrial infrastructure is unavailable or limited.

The new offering allows MEO to combine fiber, 5G, and satellite connectivity within a single communications architecture, adding a spatial dimension to its terrestrial networks and creating a more resilient connectivity solution tailored to different geographies, needs, and levels of criticality.

The solution can be used as the primary connection in locations where terrestrial networks are not available or as a backup network, ensuring operational continuity in remote locations, emergency situations, or whenever it is necessary to reduce dependence on a single connectivity infrastructure.

Connectivity is provided by Eutelsat’s OneWeb LEO constellation, consisting of more than 600 satellites in low Earth orbit, which enables high-speed, low-latency connectivity services. The use of satellite-based infrastructure allows for communications regardless of the availability of the local terrestrial network, helping to ensure operational continuity.

“A network’s resilience begins with its ability to avoid relying on a single technology. That’s why we’re combining the strength of our fiber and 5G networks with Eutelsat’s satellite connectivity, creating a multi-layered communications architecture that’s more responsive to critical situations,” emphasizes Ana Figueiredo, CEO of MEO. “This partnership allows us to bring this capability to businesses, public entities, and organizations that cannot afford to stop, ensuring

"connectivity where it is most needed and when the continuity of communications is most critical. It is also a step toward building a European connectivity ecosystem that is more resilient, self-sufficient, and prepared for the future."

The availability of these services in Portugal is the result of a strategic partnership between MEO and Eutelsat and builds on the existing technological collaboration between the two companies, now extending MEO’s connectivity ecosystem into space.

The combination of terrestrial networks and satellite technology makes it possible to meet increasingly demanding connectivity needs, particularly in critical infrastructure, remote operations, emergency situations, and contexts where uninterrupted communications are essential.

“This agreement represents an important step in the expansion of Eutelsat’s LEO services in Portugal and strengthens our long-standing partnership with MEO. As resilience and redundancy become increasingly important requirements for critical organizations and infrastructure, OneWeb’s LEO connectivity adds a complementary layer to terrestrial networks and enables us to meet communication needs in locations and situations where connectivity is particularly challenging,” said Jean-François Fallacher, CEO of Eutelsat.
