MEO Completes Modernization of the 5G Network in the Lisbon Metro and Prepares for Expansion to the Future Estrela and Santos Stations
MEO has completed the modernization of the Lisbon Metro’s mobile communications infrastructure, ensuring 5G coverage on all lines of the network starting October 2, 2026. The project enhances the connectivity experience for passengers throughout the underground network, which comprises 56 stations and spans approximately 44.5 kilometers. The project, led by MEO in close collaboration with the Lisbon Metro and with the participation of the other national mobile operators, modernized the technological infrastructure of the Blue, Yellow, Green, and Red lines, ensuring the availability of 2G, 4G, 5G, and IoT services with greater capacity, performance, and reliability.
This phase of the project has been completed ahead of schedule, reflecting the commitment of the organizations involved to modernizing communications infrastructure and enhancing the digital experience for public transportation users.

New phase accompanies the expansion of the Lisbon Metro
In parallel with the completion of this project, MEO and Metro de Lisboa are already preparing the second phase of expansion of the mobile communications infrastructure, using 5G technology, which will accompany the Metro’s network growth plan. This new phase includes the future connection between Rato and Cais do Sodré, which will include the new Estrela and Santos stations. The mobile communications infrastructure will be implemented in line with the schedule for the opening of these new connections, ensuring that the new stations are ready to meet passengers’ connectivity needs from the moment they open.

Greater capacity and reliability for passengers
The modernization of the Lisbon Metro’s mobile network translates into tangible benefits for those who use this mode of transportation on a daily basis, namely:
  • Faster mobile Internet speeds;
  • Better coverage in stations and tunnels;
  • Greater network capacity to handle periods of peak usage;
  • Reduction of communications congestion;
  • Greater reliability of digital services.
The new infrastructure also lays the groundwork for meeting the growing needs for digitization, connectivity, and the development of smart services on the Lisbon Metro. With the completion of this phase of the project, MEO strengthens its role as a technology partner of the Lisbon Metro, contributing to a mobile communications infrastructure that is more robust, resilient, and prepared to keep pace with the evolution of urban mobility and passengers’ digital needs.
