MEO has become the first operator in Portugal certified by Google to allow the transfer of a physical SIM card to a digital eSIM on Android devices, directly and autonomously, without the need to scan a QR Code or contact Customer Support. This innovation is available for Android devices with version 15 or higher and represents a significant advance in the digitalization of mobile services.
Simplification and digital leadership
The new feature allows MEO customers with compatible Android devices to transfer their number immediately, simply and securely to a new smartphone or tablet.
"We are extremely proud to be the first operator in Portugal to offer this innovative feature, which reinforces our commitment to offering the best user experience and to leading the digital transformation in the country, with what we call useful innovation, because it brings value to customers," says Carlos Bouça, MEO's Director of Engineering and Operations." The conversion from physical SIM to eSIM on Android devices, without the need to scan a QR Code, represents a crucial step in simplifying our customers' experience."
History of innovation in eSIM
MEO had already introduced, in June 2023, the conversion of the physical card to eSIM, through the myMEO customer area, via QR Code. In September 2024, it was a pioneer when it launched the "Quick Transfer" feature for Apple devices. Now, MEO is expanding this functionality to Android devices, namely Samsung and Google.
This development is part of the global digitalization trend and reinforces MEO's commitment to increasingly intuitive and convenient solutions for its customers.
