This is the first space in a national network of "Spaces with Meaning" that the Fundação MEO intends to implement in partner institutions - such as hospitals, higher education institutions and Personal Social Solidarity Institutions (IPSS) - in a collaborative approach that values proximity to local communities.
In the "Space with Sense", which is part of the ULS Algarve's Support Products Center, several of the Fundação MEO 's benchmark solutions in terms of technological accessibility are available:
- MagicContact: augmentative and alternative communication solution for people with speech difficulties and access to mobile devices for users with low motor skills.
- Grid 3: a communication tool using symbols and text, with customized keyboards and computer control via alternative interfaces. Aimed at users with neuromotor, cognitive and/or speech limitations.
- PC Eye: a camera that allows you to control the computer with your eyes, aimed at users with motor limitations.
- ZoomText - screen magnification and reading tool for users with low vision.
The "Spaces with Sense" are designed to demonstrate and experiment with accessibility technologies subsidized by the Fundação MEO. In addition to the technological solutions, the Fundação MEO provides equipment such as computers, tablets and smartphones, as well as financial support for furnishing and adapting the spaces, ensuring comfort and functionality. Beneficiaries are monitored by interdisciplinary teams from partner organizations, in this case the ULS Algarve, enabling them to be assessed on their communication skills in order to enable autonomy in the various stages of the therapeutic approach during the rehabilitation process and to adapt the technological solutions to their needs.
The inauguration event of the first "Space with meaning" at Faro Hospital was attended by the Director of the Fundação MEO, Carolina Pita Negrão, and ULS Algarve officials, namely the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Tiago Botelho; the Member of the Board of Directors, Ana Marreiros and the Director of the Education, Innovation and Research Department, Teresa Figueiredo. At a time when digital transformation is redefining the present and the future, the Fundação MEO believes in the power of technology at the service of people to transform lives.
"At Spaces with Meaning, technology takes on a real purpose at the service of innovation that cares. We break down barriers and connect people, generations and opportunities. Because to include is to transform, and the future belongs to everyone. Without exception," says the Director of the MEO Foundation, Carolina Pita Negrão. With this initiative, the Fundação MEO reinforces its contribution to promoting accessibility and inclusion, aligning itself with three United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals: Quality education (SDG 4), Reducing inequalities (SDG 10) and Partnerships for the goals (SDG 17). "Spaces with Meaning" is part of the Foundation's wider strategy, which includes projects such as "Shops with Meaning", "Music with Meaning" and "Cinema with Meaning", initiatives that have democratized access to culture and services through technology, promoting a more inclusive society.
