The project aims to facilitate access to assistive technologies for people with cerebral palsy, but also for people outside the APPC with sensory, motor and cognitive limitations, contributing to the active promotion of autonomy and equal opportunities.
This is the second space in a national network of "Spaces with Meaning" that the Fundação MEO is implementing in partner institutions - such as hospitals, higher education institutions and Personal Social Solidarity Institutions (IPSS) - in a collaborative approach that values proximity, impact and social innovation with local communities.
In the "Space with Sense", which is part of the Porto Cerebral Palsy Association, several of the Fundação MEO 's benchmark technological accessibility solutions are available:
- MagicContact: a free augmentative and alternative communication solution for people with speech difficulties and access to mobile devices for users with low motor skills. This application was developed by the Fundação MEO and has a partnership with the APPC to carry out tests with users and send suggestions for improvement.
- Grid 3: a communication tool using symbols and text, with personalized keyboards and computer control via alternative interfaces. Aimed at users with neuromotor, cognitive and/or speech limitations.
- PC Eye: a camera that allows you to control the computer with your eyes, aimed at users with motor limitations.
- ZoomText - screen magnification and reading tool for users with low vision.
The "Spaces with Sense" are designed to demonstrate and experiment with accessibility technologies subsidized by the Fundação MEO. In addition to the technological solutions, the Fundação MEO provides equipment such as computers, tablets and smartphones, as well as financial support for furnishing and adapting the spaces, ensuring comfort and functionality.
Beneficiaries are monitored by interdisciplinary teams from partner organizations, in this case the Cerebral Palsy Association of Porto, who assess the person's communication skills in order to enable autonomy at the various stages.
of therapeutic approach during the rehabilitation process and tailor technological solutions to their needs.
The inauguration event of the first "Space with meaning" in Porto was attended by the Director of the Fundação MEO, Carolina Pita Negrão and the President of the APPC, Abílio Cunha.
In an era in which digital transformation redefines the present and the future, the Fundação MEO believes in the power of technology at the service of people to transform lives.
"With Spaces with Meaning, the Fundação MEO reaffirms its commitment to inclusion, creating places where technology and empathy are at the service of all. This is the first space in the North and the aim is to continue expanding this network nationwide," says the Director of the Fundação MEO, Carolina Pita Negrão.
With this initiative, the Fundação MEO reinforces its contribution to promoting accessibility and inclusion, in line with three United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals: Quality education (SDG 4), Reducing inequalities (SDG 10) and Partnerships for the goals (SDG 17).
"Spaces with Meaning" are part of the Foundation's broader strategy, which includes projects such as "Shops with Meaning", "Music with Meaning" and "Cinema with Meaning", initiatives that have democratized access to culture and services through technology, promoting a more inclusive society.
