Following the launch of MEO's 5G network on Lisbon Metro's Red Line, the company will continue with its plan to modernize and strengthen its mobile network on the remaining lines of the Lisbon and Porto metro systems in 2025. The project stands out for its full 5G coverage, ensuring users a faster, more reliable, and more efficient connectivity experience while on the move.
Expansion work has already begun on the Yellow Line, with the Rato, Marquês de Pombal, Picoas, Saldanha, and Campo Pequeno stations being the first to benefit from this modernization. Work on this line is expected to be completed by the end of the year, followed by expansion to the Green and Blue Lines during 2026.
This is a technically demanding project, given the specific characteristics of underground environments and the fact that the work is carried out at night, taking advantage of maintenance windows on the metro lines.
MEO is also modernizing the mobile network in the Porto Metropolitan Area, strengthening it and ensuring full 5G coverage, with completion expected by the end of this year.
The implementation of 5G in the Lisbon and Porto Metro systems reaffirms MEO's commitment to investing in infrastructure modernization and the expansion of the 5G network, which currently covers 96.95% of the Portuguese population. This is another strategic step that reinforces MEO's role as a leading operator in technological innovation and in building smarter, more connected, and more sustainable cities.
