The 3 winners of the 2nd Edition of the 5G Challenge, a technological challenge by MEO Empresas that challenged national and international startups and companies to develop solutions that exploit the potential of 5G, are now known:
- Enline was the winner of the 5G Innovation Grand Prize, worth 15,000 euros. The solution, which provides digital twin technology applied to energy infrastructures without the need to install sensors (sensorless AI), combines Artificial Intelligence with electromagnetic models in order to reduce losses and detect faults, optimizing the efficiency of assets and aiding their maintenance and management.
- eSole also won over the jury with an intelligent insole that assesses various indicators of musculoskeletal health and athlete performance on the spot and in real time. The assessment is based on sensors in the insoles and artificial intelligence and aims to measure athletes' muscle fatigue and predict the risk of injury. The company won 10,000 euros when it was considered the Best Solution of Portuguese Origin (10,000 euros).
-.lumen, with its "Glasses for the Blind" solution, won the Sustainability and Social Impact Award, with a cash prize of 5,000 euros. The featured solution uses Artificial Intelligence applied to spatial navigation in glasses with "vision" cameras, making it the first technology to support blind people.
The various finalist solutions, developed by 12 companies, are powered by technologies such as artificial intelligence, augmented reality, the Internet of Things (IoT) or automation which, together with 5G connectivity, are making a difference to companies' lives.
This edition highlighted the most advanced features of 5G, which allow, for example, network slicing, the dedication of a slice of the network with guaranteed quality of service to use cases that require high resilience. Chosen from a record number of applications in the history of the competition, the various projects were developed to respond to challenges in areas such as industry, energy and telecommunications, health, aeronautics, sport and the environment.
The jury for this edition was made up of Fátima Caçador, Director of home dos Bits, Hélder Almeida, Operations Director at Efacec Power Solutions, José Pedro Nascimento, CTO at Altice Portugal and Nuno Nunes, CSO B2B at Altice Portugal. In addition to the award of three monetary prizes, distributed among three categories, the winning solutions are eligible to be included in the MEO Empresas portfolio and the universe of its strategic partnerships, allowing the solutions to be leveraged to go to market for MEO Empresas customers.
